Hello,
Well it certainly
feels like summer so it must be December! Welcome to another edition
of my newsletter.
November was a hectic
month for me, both personally and professionally. I have almost
finished a new qualification and been finalising work for a
New Zealand company. An
interesting new project has been to prepare the content of the
eLearning Association's
inaugural paper newsletter - I find it fascinating that people in an
electronic industry have requested a paper-based newsletter instead
of an emailed one. Although with the number of emails I receive, I
can understand the preference really!
I have now completed
three (and started the forth and planned the fifth!)
Business Mums Guides.
These are a set of guides written in simple English to help new
home-businesses learn about various aspects of running a business.
Other guides are already available on their site, as are notes from
the
blogging for beginners talk I gave a few weeks ago.

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I wish you a happy festive
season with many friends and much laughter.
Use your words wisely!
Tash
PS
It's not business
related, but I've had a little bit of fun reading and posting on
a new
blog about Christmas & Santa memories.
If you love Christmas, or just have a few minutes spare, have a
look!

File names By Tash Hughes of Word
Constructions
File names aren't something we usually spend
too much time thinking about - we usually spend more time and effort
on the file content.
However, the name of a file can be important
for two major reasons.
1. Finding it...
We've all done it - created a new document,
worked hard on it and stored it away. A month or so later, you need
that file and can't remember what you called it let alone where you
filed it.
It isn't just on your own computer either. Did
you save it on your PC or laptop, your USB key perhaps? And then
there are files on your website or in your blog...
2. Helping others
A file name will ideally be clear to others,
too. Maybe someone else has to find a file when you're off sick or
when you call in from a client's office. Even more importantly, file
names on a website can be a big help to your visitors - they can
identify the purpose of the file quickly, it is easier to search for
and makes more sense in their list of favourites.
A well named file (for example, www.domain.com/bloggingtips.pdf)
will include keywords and therefore be helpful in your site's search
engine rankings.
As for how to give a good file name, please
read the rest of this article on my site.
People don't want to be "marketed
TO"; they want to be "communicated WITH."

The Value of personalised gifts
From Love Santa
In these days of materialism, most of us and
especially children have many possessions. And with each Christmas
and birthday, we tend to increase the total. Our houses are
overflowing with things – unless we are strong enough to throw a lot
out, of course!
Making it special
When we give a gift, we want to make the other
person feel happy and valued. Often we want to give something that
will be a lasting symbol of our care for that person. Yet with the
amount of stuff our friends and family have, it isn’t easy to find a
gift that they’ll enjoy and that is still different or even unique.
One way to give a gift of difference is to
choose a personalised gift. That is, having the person’s name or
image somehow incorporated onto the gift.
Learn more about the value of personalised gifts by reading the
entire article.

Just in case you haven't finished your Christmas shopping (I've
hardly started!)
Poor examples
Sometimes, the easiest
way to learn the correct way to do something is to see it done
poorly so in this section of my newsletter, I show you some
real-life examples of writing that need a little help.
Today's example
comes from an unsolicited email I received today.
example:
Our company is
an extremely unique franchise in our industry!
Issues with this
example:
Unique can't be
qualified. It literally means one of a kind, the only one,
completely different to everything else. So something is either
unique (so there is nothing else like it) or it isn't.
The rest of the
sentence raises questions, too. For instance, is the company unique
in their industry but the same as other companies in other
industries? And isn't a franchise by definition a duplication so
therefore not truly unique?
A better version would
be: (without changing the meaning)
Our franchise company is unique!

personalised and unique Christmas gift idea
