Word Constructions ~ For all your business writing needs

Good day! And welcome to spring for everyone in the southern hemisphere.

Welcome to those of you who haven't received my newsletter before, and welcome back to those who have!

I am busily helping a superannuation firm prepare many new documents relating to the new choice of funds in Australia for most employees. When's the last time you compared the funds available and considered your best options? And don't forget to check out the Co-contribution scheme the government is offering to employees (sorry, self employed people don't get that deal.)

As much as I've been taught not to boast, I can't resist sharing some the feedback I've received on this project. My client has told me how relieved she is to have finally found 'a writer who can write' and the designer I'm working with has told others how I 'can edit on the spot' and 'she knows what she's doing.'

I have added a message to my site that emails may take longer to answer than usual at the moment, but I am still available for writing projects and assistance. So please let me know when I can be of assistance to you.

Be interesting, not trendy
By Tash Hughes of Word Constructions

Think about the latest phrases and expressions. How often do you hear the same phrases and words? The first few times they may catch your attention, but once they become commonplace you stop listening or reading.

Using trendy words and phrases make appear as if you are up to date and in the know, but what else does it mean to your writing?

1. Your document could date very quickly. What is trendy today may be out-moded in a few months, or even a few weeks. If you don't want to update the document regularly, it's better to use more general language.

2. It is unimaginative. Anyone can write down the latest phrase, but it takes more effort and imagination to write the same message in a unique way. Your writing will also be more personal if you choose your own expressions.

3. Like clichés, trendy expressions aren't very interesting. Your readers will enjoy variety more than a repetition of the latest trends.

4. If you mis-use a trendy expression, you end up looking silly and less up to date than an original expression anyway. For instance, writing "the cow was phat" doesn't have the same feel as " the girl is phat" (Phat comes from Pretty Hot And Tempting and has probably passed its trendy phase anyway!)

Driving torture
By Tash Hughes

Another pair of words many people could easily confuse is tortuous and torturous.

Tortuous: twisting and winding, such as driving along a tortuous road.

Torturous: painful, agonising, upsetting, such as a torturous stay in prison

To tell them apart, think of the word torture and torturous together as painful and unpleasant.

Dealing with customer complaints
By Tash Hughes of Save Time Online

The most important aspect of any business is the customer – without customers, your business will not succeed. And happy, satisfied customers will carry your business to great success.

Knowing that, most business owners and their staff will work to make customers happy with the service and products. You can value add, offer quality products and do it all professionally for a good price.

However, even the best business will have unhappy customers. They may be unhappy about something out of your control or be unreasonable, but if they are unhappy it can impact on you and your business.

Complaints can be a positive!
