Word Constructions ~ For all your business writing needs

Happy Melbourne Cup Day today - and Happy Halloween for yesterday!

Welcome to those of you who haven't received my newsletter before, and welcome back to those who have!

Well Makybe Diva has broken all records and won the Melbourne Cup for the third year in a row - amazing. There's a lot to gained from watching her progress; the trainer wasn't going to let her run unless the track was in good condition but otherwise had faith in her and no one gave up. If only we could all do that on our own lives and businesses - prepare good conditions for ourselves, never settle for unsuitable situations and always keep faith.

With November upon us, we're into the home straight of the year. This is potentially a busy time of year in and out of business, so the more preparation you do and help you can get the easier things should be. I'm impressed with some new clients who are booking me for early next year - they know they need writing assistance but won't have the time before Christmas to implement anything new.

Tash

PS I am reducing the hours I'm on site with clients so you can expect quicker replies to emails and queries again. Thanks for your patience as I've dealt with some larger clients.

What's the date ...
By Tash Hughes of Word Constructions

Ok, you can probably figure out that 28/6/03 is the 28th June or 4/30/98 is the 30th April in the USA. But what date is 4/6/05?
If you're sure it's Australian or British, you know it's the 4th of June; if you're sure it's American, the date is the 6th of April. But if you aren't sure of the origin, you can't be sure of the date.

The best way to be sure everyone knows what date you are referring to when you write a date on a letter or other document is to mix words and numerals. For instance, 5th March 1998 and 1st May 2004 are extremely clear to anyone who can read English, even if they are used to things in a different order.

Santa and the elves prepraing a list of nice children
Tash is helping Santa again this Christmas by writing personalised letters to children and adults across Australia. Have you thought of Santa letters as a unique thank gift to clients and staff this year? They're fun and will be remembered for longer than a hamper or box of chocolates!

Click to join the clique
By Tash Hughes

Although spelt very differently, click and clique are pronounced the same.

A click is a sharp sound, such as when high heels click across a floor or someone clicks their fingers.

A tight group of people, however, is called a clique. A clique is often hard to join as they are fairly exclusive.

Remember you only need to queue to join a clique, not to click your fingers!

Business Profiles
By Tash Hughes of
Word Constructions

No matter how descriptive your business name and tag line, not everyone will automatically know what you offer. Or they will want to know the specifics.

One way to explain your business well is to have a business profile.

The profile outlines the main purpose of your business; it will explain that you sell a certain type of product online, or that you serve businesses in certain ways or that you offer households a trade.

A profile can vary in length depending on how you use it, but it is usual to keep them under a page as people don't want to spend too long reading about you.

Profiles can be written in different styles according to your business style and the particular market the profile is reaching.

What do I do with a profile?

A business profile can be a handy tool and used in a number of ways. Here are a few suggestions for you:

  • Send it as an email or fax to people making enquiries about your business. It can even be added to an auto responder.

  • Send it when you are negotiating with a new supplier or joint venture partner.

  • A number of network groups and sites will make your profile available for other members to learn about your business.

  • Use it as an ad or editorial in a newsletter - shortened if necessary.

  • Attach it to media releases you send out as back up information.

  • Have it attached to websites where you are a contributor or expert

The Search Engine Optimization Secret That Everybody Ignores
by David Callan of akamarketing

Search engine optimization is a very critical task in the success of any website. In recent times search engines seem to have complicated this task further by their frequent changes in rules. This has caused lots of anxiety as some of these changes have seen some sites lose virtually all their regular traffic instantly as their rankings have tumbled.

This has further added to the confusion amongst webmasters about search engines and their motivations. But no matter how mad one gets at the search engines, there is little that they can do to change the statistics which clearly indicate that well over 75 per cent of the traffic that most sites receive comes directly from search engines.
